Export map as pdf

Hi, if I print to pdf the output is a low quality bitmap image of the map. Is it possible for the pdf output to be vector based and the node text in the pdf to be searchable. When printing to XPS the output appears to be vector based but the node text is not searchable. XPS isn't cross platform. PDF printing would be great because it allows non editable maps to be viewed on any platform and normally these can be searched by Windows Desktop Search or Spotlight in Mac OS X etc. An option to print the map to a single page (make the dimensions of this single page big enough to fit the map) would be great for on screen viewing.

I've tried a few free pdf printers for Windows XP SP2 so far, primopdf, pdfcreator, bullzippdf, all with the same result. Would Vista or Adobe Acrobat make any difference?

Thanks for your great app.

Re: Export map as pdf

Hi,
If you want the map to look best, you should save it as .bmp image. If you open your map in Fixed layout, then you can save it as a whole, and then choose whether you want to print it as a whole or part by part.
What concerns making nodes searchable in PDF, the idea seems attractive, so we'll most likely will implement this feature, although can't give you specific dates yet.

I'm using Cayra in Windows XP SP3 running in a VMWare Fusion virtual machine on Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.2.

I can now produce vector based pdfs including text which is searchable by printing to cups-pdf on my host Mac OS X.

These steps have to be run in a user account with administrator privileges due to an authentication bug in cups. I just temporarily elevate my user account to administrator.

Install cups-pdf in Mac OS X from http://www.codepoetry.net/projects/cups-pdf-for-mosx Select generic color ps printer and add.

Turn on printer sharing. Share cups-pdf printer.

In VMWare set networking to bridged. Install bonjour for windows. Run bonjour for windows and select cups-pdf. The printer will install as long as your Mac OS X account has administrator privileges.

Print to cups-pdf from Cayra. The pdf output for anonymous users goes to /private/var/spool/cups-pdf/ANONYMOUS/

The windows based pdf solutions I tried all produced bitmap based pdfs which were not text searchable. The xps printer produced non text searchable vector based xps documents.
